Dadly Off In All Directions: Silence the Dragons....

I know this is a parenting blog and we'll get back to that in a moment, folks but I wanted to ask for a moment of silence for the fallen. Gary Gygax, the father of Dungeons and Dragons and the modern Role Playing Game passed away today. Details can be found on the link here:

Everything I learned about parenting I learned in the infantry.

1. "Remember, a baby screaming at you is kinda like a drill sergeant screaming at a recruit. He's not trying to scare you. He's just trying to give you his perspective on the situation."

-Me.

2. "Sleep deprivation should be embraced as a state of being and a good way to build confidence. If, on two hours sleep, you can navigate a minefield, chances are you can change a diaper while still keeping your sense of humour."

-Still Me...

3. "One man. One kit. An oldy but a goody which means if you can't carry it don't bring it. Goes for parenting too. Strollers break. Cars die when you least expect it. If you can't carry the child and the essentials at the same time, you're carrying too much. So, 'One man. One kid.' It might just save your life."

-Yep. Me again.

4. "Pack as if seconds count." Everything should be packed the same way, in the same place. In the field you don't want to be rummaging through a rucksack while your buddy needs first aid. Likewise, when you pull that diaper pin, your infant's fuse gets lit. That new diaper better be handy, mate. The last thing you want to do is turn your back on a ticking bum.

- Well, who do ya think?

5. When there's a pause in the routine (ie. when your child is distracted for longer than 30 seconds by anything non-life threatneing) "suck in, change snacks, and soldier on." With appropriate apologies to my old Platoon Warrant for paraphrasing...

- Guess...

6. The Parenting Writer's Paradox (yeah, I know it's not a military euphemism but it's related to Murphy's Guide to the Infantry so what the heck): Those who have something to write about parenting are, more often than not, too busy parenting (read: tired) to write about it.
